Yosemite National Park (pronounced /joʊˈsɛmɨtiː/ yoe-SEM-it-ee) is a national park spanning eastern portions of Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera counties in east central California, United States. The park covers an area of 761,266 acres (308,073 ha) and reaches across the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain chain. Yosemite is visited by over 3.5 million people each year, many of whom only spend time in the seven square miles (18 km) of Yosemite Valley. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its spectacular granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, Giant Sequoia groves, and biological diversity. Almost 95% of the park is designated wilderness. Although not the first designated national park, Yosemite was central to the development of the national park idea, largely owing to the work of people like and Galen Clark and John Muir.

Yosemite is one of the largest and least fragmented habitat blocks in the Sierra Nevada, and the park supports a diversity of plants and animals. The park has an elevation range from 2,000 to 13,114 feet (610 to 4,000 m) and contains five major vegetation zones: chaparral/oak woodland, lower montane, upper montane, subalpine, and alpine. Of California's 7,000 plant species, about 50% occur in the Sierra Nevada and more than 20% within Yosemite. There is suitable habitat or documentation for more than 160 rare plants in the park, with rare local geologic formations and unique soils characterizing the restricted ranges many of these plants occupy.

The geology of the Yosemite area is characterized by granitic rocks and remnants of older rock. About 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and then tilted to form its relatively gentle western slopes and the more dramatic eastern slopes. The uplift increased the steepness of stream and river beds, resulting in formation of deep, narrow canyons. About 1 million years ago, snow and ice accumulated, forming glaciers at the higher alpine meadows that moved down the river valleys. Ice thickness in Yosemite Valley may have reached 4,000 feet (1,200 m) during the early glacial episode. The downslope movement of the ice masses cut and sculpted the U-shaped valley that attracts so many visitors to its scenic vistas today.

Need advise on trip to Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park?
Q. I will be travelling to Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park in mid May. I'll land in Las Vegas first. After Grand Canyon I will go to Yosemite National Park. Do I need to rent a car to travel to Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park? Is the road save to drive? If I drive to Grand Canyon, should I drive into the park or should I park the car outside and take the shuttle?

A. Yes, you have to rent a car unless you plan to fly from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon Airport. The distance from Las Vegas Airport to Grand Canyon Village on the sourth rim is 275 miles. The route follows I-515 / US-93 / I-40 / SR-64 and will take about 4 hours and 20 minutes to drive not including any stops you may make along the way. This is a safe road to drive as long as you're on your toes and don't fall asleep at the wheel. If your rental car doesn't have driving lights, use your head lights to make yourself more visible to oncoming traffic when driving on undivided highways. Drive into Grand Canyon Village and park the car near your hotel/lodge accommodations. I like the Maswik and Yavapai Lodges because they are situated away… [cont.]

Where's the most secluded place to camp in around Yosemite National Park?
Q. I go camping every year with a few friends, and we've camped tamarack flat, and cherry lake which is about 15 miles outside the gates of Yosemite. We're always looking for a better spot to camp, yet is still accessible by car, but a spot that doesn't attract a lot of crowds. Both tamarack, and cherry lake were great places to camp, but if you know of anything better or have heard any reviews for white wolf please let me know. It doesn't have to be inside the park. Thanks

Should I go to San Diego or Yosemite national park 4 my Senior trip?
Q. My school is offering a senior to either of theses places and my parents, although not of a disposable income and already stressed by college fees, have graciously agreed to pay. However I have no idea which trip to choice. Yosemite is suppose to be beautiful but I'm not an outdoors person at all and these trips cost a lot of money.
