Proper nounSingular Usenet Plural - Usenet
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Usenet is a worldwide distributed Internet discussion system. It developed from the general purpose UUCP architecture of the same name. Duke University graduate students Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis conceived the idea in 1979 and it was established in 1980. Users read and post messages (called articles or posts, and collectively termed news) to one or more categories, known as newsgroups. Usenet resembles a bulletin board system (BBS) in many respects, and is the precursor to the various Internet forums that are widely used today; and can be superficially regarded as a hybrid between email and web forums. Discussions are threaded, with modern news reader software, as with web forums and BBSes, though posts are stored on the server sequentially. One notable difference between a BBS or web forum and Usenet is the absence of a central server and dedicated administrator. Usenet is distributed among a large, constantly changing conglomeration of servers that store and forward messages to one another in so-called news feeds. Individual users may read messages from and post messages to a local server operated by their Internet service provider, university, or employer. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How much is the subscription frees for access to Usenet? Q. Can anyone know how much? 10 points provided if you know the answer Thank youu! Asked by taratoro - Thu Sep 3 16:45:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I hope i get your question right. Usenet in general is free. So is subscribing to any kind of newsgroups. What you probably meant is the fee the provider is asking for to access those groups. There are many different providers, you can have access for as low as $2.95 a month. If you want to download a lot of big files you're probably looking towards 20$ a month for an unlimited access. Which means no limitations in speed, volume etc. It pretty much depends on what you want to do. If you only want to access the discussion groups and load text files you should look if your internet provider gives you access to those. But be aware these groups are often censored by the provider. If you're looking for some uncensored group providers here's a… [cont.] Answered by Joan - Sat Sep 5 08:27:37 2009 How do I read Usenet groups using Mozilla Thunderbird or Windows Mail? Q. Whois tells me that 216.252.100.138 is owned by Yahoo. And 41.201.22.158 is owned by Telecom Algeria. I used geektools.com to get the info. Realize that IP addresses are very easy to spoof as is email so the information may or may not be useful.
