The nearest star to Earth is the Sun, which is the source of most of the energy on Earth. Other stars are visible in the night sky, when they are not outshone by the Sun. Historically, the most prominent stars on the celestial sphere were grouped together into constellations and asterisms, and the brightest stars gained proper names. Extensive catalogues of stars have been assembled by astronomers, which provide standardized star designations. For at least a portion its life, a star shines due to thermonuclear fusion of hydrogen in its core releasing energy that traverses the star's interior and then radiates into outer space. Almost all naturally occurring elements heavier than helium were created by stars, either via stellar nucleosynthesis during their lifetimes or by supernova nucleosynthesis when stars explode. Astronomers can determine the mass, age, chemical composition and many other properties of a star by observing its spectrum, luminosity and motion through space. The total mass of a star is the principal determinant in its evolution and eventual fate. Other characteristics of a star are determined by its evolutionary history, including diameter, rotation, movement and temperature. A plot of the temperature of many stars against their luminosities, known as a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (H–R diagram), allows the age and evolutionary state of a star to be determined. A star begins as a collapsing cloud of material composed primarily of hydrogen, along with helium and trace amounts of heavier elements. Once the stellar core is sufficiently dense, some of the hydrogen is steadily converted into helium through the process of nuclear fusion. The remainder of the star's interior carries energy away from the core through a combination of radiative and convective processes. The star's internal pressure prevents it from collapsing further under its own gravity. Once the hydrogen fuel at the core is exhausted, those stars having at least 0.4 times the mass of the Sun expand to become a red giant, in some cases fusing heavier elements at the core or in shells around the core. The star then evolves into a degenerate form, recycling a portion of the matter into the interstellar environment, where it will form a new generation of stars with a higher proportion of heavy elements. Binary and multi-star systems consist of two or more stars that are gravitationally bound, and generally move around each other in stable orbits. When two such stars have a relatively close orbit, their gravitational interaction can have a significant impact on their evolution. Stars can form part of a much larger gravitationally bound structure, such as a cluster or a galaxy. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "stars" From Yahoo Image Search: "stars" What supermassive star is known or believed to have the largest number of smaller stars orbitting it? Q. I see many stars that are even bigger relative to our sun than our sun is to most of the other planets in our solar system. Surely there have to be some multiple-star systems arranged in which tiny stars such as our Sol orbit much more massive stars such as VY Canis Majoris. Asked by uncleclover - Thu Jul 16 00:42:06 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Castor is a sextuple star system, meaning it has 5 stars orbiting it. ADS 973 is also sextuple star system. You can read more about multiple star systems and about Castor in the sources below: Answered by Marcie - Fri Jul 17 08:50:45 2009 How do i take pictures of stars and celestial bodies? Q. I own a Canon 40D and a couple of lenses. I know that i need to use an InfraRed Filter and a very long shutter. I tried to shoot stars last night, but all i got was a red, hazy, light. No stars. What am i missing? By the way, i live in Hong Kong, which is a city, but the place i took the picture doesnt have a lot of light and that night was cloudless, so i saw quite a lot of stars. Answered by rangers bairn..we won the league - Fri Feb 20 07:07:33 2009 How do I change how many stars I have rated a book on amazon? Can you give 0 stars?
Q. I left a bad review on amazon for a rubbish book I had read. I gave the book 1 star. However it actually deserves 0 stars. Is it possibl for me to change this, and can you give a book 0 stars? I've clicked on "edit my review" but I don't seem to be able to make the star I gave it go away, it seems I can only increase the stars. It hurts me to pee and it causes me to be short with my family. I can't sleep at night. The other day i stubbed my toe and took it out on the dog. Then two weeks ago i ran out of apple pie and hit my wife.
