From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The Solar System consists of the Sun and those celestial objects bound to it by gravity, all of which were formed from the collapse of a giant molecular cloud approximately 4.6 billion years ago. Of the many objects that orbit the Sun, most of the mass is contained within eight relatively solitary planets whose orbits are almost circular and lie within a nearly flat disc called the ecliptic plane. The four smaller inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, also called the terrestrial planets, are primarily composed of rock and metal. The four outer planets, the gas giants, are substantially more massive than the terrestrials. The two largest, Jupiter and Saturn, are composed mainly of hydrogen and helium; the two outermost planets, Uranus and Neptune, are composed largely of ices, such as water, ammonia and methane, and are often referred to separately as "ice giants". The Solar System is also home to two regions populated by smaller objects. The asteroid belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter, is similar to the terrestrial planets as it is composed mainly of rock and metal. Beyond Neptune's orbit lie trans-Neptunian objects composed mostly of ices such as water, ammonia and methane. Within these two regions, five individual objects, Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris, are recognized to be large enough to have been rounded by their own gravity, and are thus termed dwarf planets. In addition to thousands of small bodies in those two regions, various other small body populations, such as comets, centaurs and interplanetary dust, freely travel between regions. The solar wind, a flow of plasma from the Sun, creates a bubble in the interstellar medium known as the heliosphere, which extends out to the edge of the scattered disc. The hypothetical Oort cloud, which acts as the source for long-period comets, may also exist at a distance roughly a thousand times further than the heliosphere. Six of the planets and three of the dwarf planets are orbited by natural satellites, usually termed "moons" after Earth's Moon. Each of the outer planets is encircled by planetary rings of dust and other particles. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I'm taking a class in the astronomy department this spring and two are offered: "The Solar System" and "The Cosmic System". What's the difference? Asked by Rachel - Tue Jan 13 19:54:51 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. A cosmic system consists of a galaxy or galaxies or the entire Universe. The solar system consists of a star, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, gases and what not. Take the Cosmic Systems, you may learn a lot more than if you were to take a course of only solar systems. Answered by Jupiter - Tue Jan 13 20:46:20 2009 How long dose it take our solar system to rotate around the Milky Way? Q. I have a question for Biology. How long dose it take our solar system to rotate around the Milky Way? Asked by Scott M - Wed Feb 25 21:15:15 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. It takes the Solar System about 225 250 million years to complete one orbit of the galaxy The orbital speed of the Solar System about the center of the Galaxy is approximately 220 km/s. At this speed, it takes around 1,400 years for the Solar System to travel a distance of 1 light-year, or 8 days to travel 1 astronomical unit The milky way is about 100 light years across, which the sun is about two thirds of the way out. How does this relate to Biology? Answered by BomVoyage - Wed Feb 25 22:15:16 2009 Has anyone heard of a solar system that combines photovoltaics and heating water?
Q. I was thinking that if a system could both concentrate sunlight to get more voltage out of solar cells and in order to cool them, run water through the system. This way a building could get both electricity and heat with one system. I meant to say increase power, not voltage. Asked by JimmyD - Sat Mar 7 20:52:13 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. yes, and yes they do make them. I work for a solar company who owns a start up company that is producing this type of panel as we speak. there is more than one company doing this, expect popularity to rise within 2 years. The problems they face are the panels getting too hot due to the mirrors for the pv side. the eff. is at around 18% for pv, 95% for the thermal part.
