Mental health is a term used to describe either a level of cognitive or emotional well-being or an absence of a mental disorder. From perspectives of the discipline of positive psychology or holism mental health may include an individual's ability to enjoy life and procure a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.

The World Health Organization defines mental health as "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”. It was previously stated that there was no one "official" definition of mental health. Cultural differences, subjective assessments, and competing professional theories all affect how "mental health" is defined.

What guidelines exist for mental health therapy and treatment?
Q. I have heard that mental health treatment is highly unregulated. Cruel practices such as reparative therapy and electric shock treatment are practiced on patients without evidence to back up their safety and effectiveness. What guidelines exist for mental health treatment? What is allowed, and what is not?

A. Actually it is highly regulated among licensed professionals. The problem is that anyone can call themselves a "therapist" without education or licensure. Just like anyone can call themselves a "life coach, job coach," etc. LMFT's (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists) and LP's (Licensed Psychologists) have ethical guidelines they must follow or risk losing their license. I don't know where the LMFT's get theres, but you can go to APA.org to see the code of ethics for psychologists.

How many mental health problems are caused by lack of proper food?
Q. I answered a question just now about someone who was getting run down, and I always feel better when I am not living alone. There is some point in eating proper meals at proper times, but I cannot be bothered with it when I am alone. Could it be that good cooking could solve a lot of mental health issues, in particular depression and anxiety?

A. There's an old saying"what you eat is what you are",the things we consume obviously have an affect on our mood and if your not eating then you could suffer.Depression is only associated with emotional problems but food has important part to play as well, good question Elmy.

How many mental health professional consider bisexuality as part of a disorder?
Q. If a patient considers themselves 'bisexual' or 'gay', I know in the past this has been seen as a symptom of their psychiatric disorder (or an actual disorder). Are there still mental health professions who still believe this, is it still debated? If so why? Thanks for answering :-)

A. No. In the 1970's the APA finally got their act together and figured out that homosexuality is neither a sign of mental illness nor deviance. It was then taken out of the DSM so it can't even be diagnosed as such, either. If a doctor still considered homosexuality a psychiatric disorder, they really need to catch up with the times (and get their head out of their ass).
