The Space Race was an informal competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to see who could make the furthest advancements into space first. It involved the efforts to explore outer space with artificial satellites, to send humans into space, and to land them on the Moon. The Space Race effectively began after the Soviet Launch of Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957. The term originated as an analogy to the arms race. The Space Race became an important part of the cultural, technological, and ideological rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. For primary sources you'd really need to get copies of documents from NASA and/or the US government as well as the equivalent from Russia. For a school assignment that could be a challenge, particularly from the Russian side! There may be press releases you could find, which are still primary. Another source might be the Kettering Group, a school-based group of enthusiasts who tracked Soviet launches, analysed signals and deduced orbits, revealing the existence of the Plesetsk Cosmodrome.
