A national park is a reserve of natural or semi-natural land, declared or owned by a government, set aside for human recreation and enjoyment, and protected from most development. While ideas for national parks had been suggested previously, what is held to be the first one established was the United States' Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined National Parks as its category II type of protected areas. The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, there are now 6,555 national parks worldwide (2006 figure).

What to do in Shiretoko National Park in Winter?
Q. I'm planning for a trip to Hokkaido in end Feb. I am planning to spend a day at Shiretoko National Park. Is it still possible to track there during winter? What is the temperature like? How do I get there after I get to Utoro? Where can I find the timings for the bus to Utoro from Shiretoko Shari? I wanted to "visit" Lake MASHU, take some photos of it. Any good way that I can get to a nice spot?

A. How about ice diving? It is very popular there! Temperature can go down to -25C! The Shiretoko togei road is closed in winter! Here is the bus: You need snowshoes if you want to go tracking! Better to take a cruise on the drift ice maybe! There is a good lookout at Lake Mashu on top of the mountain.

A. I'd go a little further and stop in Wendover NV . I'd spend an hour early the next morning exploring Bonneville Salt Flats.

What is a good National Park Vacation spot for two?
Q. Well, I have enough money to take my girlfriend and I on a romantic vacation. We both want to go to a National Park that has beautiful scenery, not many people on the trails, and a decent hotel that we are able to book at least three months in advanced. Since Yosemite will take a year to get a decent hotel, we want to find another, less known park.

A. Have you considered Mesa Verde in Colorado. This seems to be a slow year for them because Far View Lodge in the park is normally sold out for the summer. However, I've been checking recently because I'll be there in September. Surprisingly they have rooms available in August and September. Go to the following link to check it out. Mesa Verde is just a few hours drive from Arches and Canyonlands if you want to extend your trip. Both parks have good hiking trails and it shouldn't be a problem getting a room in nearby Moab.
