Q. I know tests can find out most "problems" that a baby might have (Down syndrome etc), but what kind of problems would only show up after birth? I assume they are checking that all hands and feet are there beforehand right? Can you also see big birthmarks before the birth through ultrasound (I've seen babies with big birth marks on their face, does that show before?) - and what could come as a big shock AFTER the birth, that is a serious handicap for a child? No amount of testing will show whether or not your baby is deaf or blind. My brother is autistic and obviously that didn't show up for years. There is also bi-polar disorder and other mental illnesses that can cause serious handicaps in life that will never show up on any test. Birth marks also do not show up. Genetic issues such as hemophilia often don't show up until after birth, for boys it's often during the circumcision. Genetic testing and ultrasounds only show a hand full of the problems that can come up.
