Aerospace comprises the atmosphere of Earth and surrounding space. Typically the term is used to refer to the industry that researches, designs, manufactures, operates, and maintains vehicles moving through air and space. Aerospace is a very diverse field, with a multitude of commercial, industrial and military applications.

Aerospace is not the same as airspace, which is a term used to describe the physical air space directly above a location on the ground.

What path should I take if I want to be in the aerospace field?
Q. I am entering my third year in college, studying mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan. I have good grades (3.58 GPA) and am about to finish an internship for an auto parts company in Michigan. Looking for some advice and how I can help line my self up for a position at place like Boeing or Lockheed or any other major aerospace corporation.

A. if you're studying Mechanical engineering, i believe that you're qualified enough for aerospace engineering. At the university that I'm attending now (UT Arlington) Aerospace & Mechaniocal Engineering Classes go toguether and Both Fields Are 60% similar, the only difference is that Aerospace is more Narower than Mechanical engineering, since Aerospace only focuses on the air and Space stuff. if you want to go to Aerospace, i know that the University of Michigan offer aerospace under ABET so just change your major by going to your advisor and switch departments, since youre in Mechanical, im preety sure that the credit hours are going to transfer over. But you culd also do a double major since youre allready in your third year too, But… [cont.]

Can an aerospace engineer specializing in stress analysis get into the civil engineering field?
Q. I do stress analysis on aerospace structures (fiber reinforced composite materials). I was wondering, when I get laid off several years from now due to the instability of my industry, how likely am I able to get into the civil engineering field? Someday I would like to design bridges and other civil structures. Steel reinforced concrete structures seem similar to graphite reinforced epoxy structures, which is the material I have expertise in.

A. My degree is in Mechanical Engineering. My job is as a Civil Engineer. To answer your question: yes, you can get into the CE field. If there's one thing that people with CE degrees hate, it's Structural Analysis. If you understand it and enjoy it, there is a place for you somewhere.
