A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video, or other piece of content. Hyperlinks present in resources enable users to easily navigate their browsers to related resources.

Although browsers are primarily intended to access the World Wide Web, they can also be used to access information provided by Web servers in private networks or files in file systems. Some browsers can be also used to save information resources to file systems.

How do I run a web browser from linux command line?
Q. I an VERY new to linux. I have installed Fedora 5 in text mode. I have a Linux book and am trying to slowly learn linux. So from the console, or command line, how do I run a web browser. Also how do I run the X Windows System?

A. If you installed in text mode, maybe you didn't install X. You probably have a text mode browser. Try lynx or elinks. If the startx command doesn't work, try "yum install x-window-system". By the way, Fedora 5 is old. The current version of Fedora is 9.

How can I make IE my default web browser when IE will not give me the prompt after changing settings?
Q. I have tried telling IE to prompt me for my default web browser, but I do not receive the prompt after I restart IE. The box is checked in my settings to prompt me. I have also tried changing my windows programs and defaults, and this does not work. Whenever I try to load a website in my IE browser history, it loads in Firefox instead.

A. Personally I don't see why you would want to switch back to IE and leave the trouble-free and free FireFox, but here's what you can do. Open Control Panel. Double-click Internet Options. Depending on what version of IE you have, your window may differ. Go to the Programs tab. There check the box that says to IE should check if it is the default program. Again, depending on you version, you may even have a button that says, Make Default. If your box is already checked, uncheck it, click OK. Then reopen Internet Options and this time check box again. Click OK. Another solution could be to upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer by going to: Have fun!
