A meteoroid is a sand- to boulder-sized particle of debris in the Solar System. The visible path of a meteoroid that enters Earth's (or another body's) atmosphere is called a meteor, or colloquially a shooting star or falling star. If a meteor reaches the ground and survives impact, then it is called a meteorite. Many meteors appearing seconds or minutes apart are called a meteor shower. The root word meteor comes from the Greek meteĊros, meaning "high in the air".

What ae the difference between Asteroids, Meteoroid, and Comet?
Q. Asteroids? Meteoroid? Comet?
Asked by NRG - Wed Feb 24 18:58:56 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Asteroids are made of rock and metal, the orbits the sun and are though to be made in the inner solar system. When asteroids collide, the smaller pieces are called meteoroids. A meteor is when space debris enters the Earth's atmosphere, making it ignite and light on fire, this is called a meteor. A comet is Made of ice and dust, often referred to as a dirt Snowball. Comets have very elongated orbits around the sun, and grow a tail when near the sun. The tail grows because when the asteroid is coming close to the sun, the heat of the sun causes the ice to vaporize, creating a tail of vapor behind the comet. Meteoroids can also be made when dust particles are left behind by the comets tail.

How big is an asteroid? If it is too small is is then classed as a meteoroid?
Q. I've looked on loads of different sites but they all contradict each other...does anyone know?

A. i learned this one in 3 GRED..Asteroids size r ranging from the size of 1.6 km(1 mile) to 1000 km (600 miles) across & flying about the solar system. they r mostly found in a belt which lies far beyond the EARTH, between the orbits of MARS & JUPITER. smaller than asteroids are classed as meteorites which is size ranging from inches to dust-size particles.usually they r burnt up in the atmosphere & the blaze can be seen from earth as'shooting' or 'falling stars'... :O p/s : class dismissed... :)

How large does a meteoroid that hits the earth have to be to cause a global catastrophe?
Q. Approx. how often does this happen?

A. If a meteoroid is wider than 3 miles, there could be few chances the human being could survive. It happens about every 80-100 millions of years.
